The story behind Freaky Ryder Auto begins with a cannabis plant that looked unlike almost anything else. Its leaves did not form the familiar fan shape associated with cannabis. Instead, narrow leaflets ran along a central axis, with deep serrations giving the whole leaf the appearance of a fern.
That mutation became known as the fern-leaf, or pinnate leaf, and it is the defining feature of Freakshow. From a few meters away, the silhouette can be difficult for a casual observer to identify as cannabis. Up close, the flowering plant is another matter entirely. The flowers still look like cannabis and the plant still carries a recognizable aroma.
What makes the story interesting is not just the usual appearance. It is the people and years of selection behind it.
The Man Who Kept The Freaks
Shapeshifter of Hi-Elevation Genetics is a California breeder who has worked with cannabis since the 1970s. Living off-grid in rural California near Yosemite, he is a self-taught breeder who also repairs motorcycles, sews clothes,, and practises year-round permaculture.
He came to breeding in an era when imported cannabis "bricks" were a source of seeds and growing hundreds of seedlings to select from was normal. While the market increasingly moved toward broad-leaf Afghan lines and hybrids, Shapeshifter kept an interest in narrow-leaf sativas, where unsual anomalies apppeared more often. Dwarf forms, webbed leaves, fasciation, plants with 21 leaflets, double serrations and even buds growing from leaf stems passed through his hands.
Others culled them. He kept them.
That decision eventually led to Freakshow.
How Freakshow Came About
The original Freakshow project began with a Pineapple Express female crossed with a Holy Chiquita male, also known as Holy Banana. The working name was Holy Express.
The Pineapple Express came from a G13 Labs line which, according to Shapeshifter, no longer exists. Holy Chiquita was bred by Coastal Seed Co. of Santa Cruz from Big Sur Holy Weed and Banana Kush. The male was selected for narrow leaflets, more leaflets, red stems, deeper serrations, a sweet fruity terpene profile and high trichome density. And yes, male plants produce trichomes too.
The mutation did not appear in the first generation. The F1 was uniform. It was in the F2 that a new leaf type appeared, with very deep serrations. This became known as the "alligator tooth" leaf, or Freakshow type 1. The same line prodcued a second abnormal phenotype with an absurd number of extra leaflets. Plants expressing the two phenotypes were crossed, and hundreds of seeds were screened for deformities.
The name Freakshow came from plants that "could not be described any other way." Shapeshifter's son posted photographs online asking, "Does anyone have anything similar?" There were no replies.
This was Freakshow type 2, the fern-leaf phenotype recognized today. Type 1 had led to type 2.
From Mutation to Stable Line
Finding an unusual trait is one thing. Keeping the trait through generations is another. By F4, the line was breeding true for its leaf shape: every germinated seed produced the fern-leaf phenotype, with no exceptions reported. Shapeshifter also selected for much more than the leaf. Terpene profile came first, particularly the sesquiterpenes associated with flavor and smoke quality. Trichome density, THC level, calyx-to-leaf ratio, flower structure and size, flowering time, and resistance to pests and powdery mildew were also considered.

Shapeshifter carried the line to F3 and handed it to Nat and Ben at Humboldt Seed Company. They produced F4 and advanced the line through F5, F6 and F7, the generations known as Supafreaks. From F7/F8 onward, and with the feminized version, the two sides agreed to work together.
Elsewhere, 7 East Genetics advanced Freakshow through F9. That F9 line became the mother line used in the development of Freaky Ryder Auto.
The exact genetic mechanism behind the fern-leaf mutation is still not established. Shapeshifter has proposed that regulatory functions involving KNOX1 and FLO-LFY genes may be involved, but he described this as a guess. The breeding itself involved chemicals or genetic modification. It followed a much older principle: grow large numbers of seedlings, select the unusual plants worth keeping, cross them and repeat.
Freakshow was released by Humboldt Seed Company in 2019 and went on to spread worldwide among growers and breeders interested in unusual cannabis genetics.
Enter mutantfarmer and Doctor's Choice
This is where the Freakshow story meets Doctor's Choice and mutantfarmer.
Since 2022, mutantfarmer has been developing his own lines around mutant cannabis genetics, including Freakshow and ABC, or Australian Bastard Cannabis, alongside autoflowering and fast versions based on Lowryder.
The starting material included 7 East Genetic's Freakshow reproduction, a Drunken Bastard hybrid carrying the ABC mutation, and Doctor's Choice Lowryder IBL. The first crosses between the mutants and Lowryder produced Bastard Ryder and Freaky Ryder.
Creating an autoflowering mutant line required large-scale selection. In the second generation, hundreds of seeds were sown per line, and only a few percent of plants expressed the desired combination of autoflowering and mutant leaf traits.
That selection continued over several years.
mutantfarmer's work was closely connected to Doctor's Choice through its Be a Breeder programme. Launched in December 2023, Be a Breeder supports growers carrying out their own selection from Doctor's Choice regular seeds. mutantfarmers was the first participant to join and became its first graduate, with support from Doctor's Choice and Sasha Joint Doctor personally.
The wider breeding work was documented openly, including successes and failure. Spider mites forced an early harvest in one run. Thrips slowed another. Seedlings were lost to old coco coir, a hermaphrodite appeared in a Freakshow line, and false pH-meter readings allowed substrate conditions to drift as low as 4.8-5.2.
Those setbacks were part of the three-year selection process that took Freaky Ryder through F5.
The breeding diary, reports and discussions were also shared through ICMag and other open platforms, giving other breeders a chance to follow the work rather than seeing only the finished result.
Three Contributors, One Unusual Project
The collaboration announced in 2025 brought three distinct strands of expertise together. Doctor's Choice brough the Lowryder heritage, including the work of Joint Doctor, creator of the original Lowryder. mutantfarmer brought years of selection focused on mutant genetics and the Freakshow line.
Seedsman brought the opportunity to introduce the resulting family to a much wider audience, with feminized seeds making the Freaky Ryder experience accessible to growers who want an all-female run without sexing plants.
The first Freaky Ryder release was presented as regular seed through Doctor's Choice and became part of its Be a Breeder offering for breeders and pheno hunters. The feminized version is exclusive to Seedsman.
That distinction matters. The regular and feminized releases are not competing stories. They serve different parts of the same project: regular seeds preserve opportunities for breeding and selection, while the Seedsman release gives growers who are simply interested in growing freaky Ryder the option of feminized seeds.
Freaky Ryder Auto Feminized
Freaky Ryder Auto reminized combines Freakshow F9 with Lowryder IBL. The first test crosses produced one outstanding female selected for a sweet floral and pine aroma, dense buds, and the thin-fingered Freaskshow leaf. In the F2 generation, around 350 plants were grown and just two of the strongest autoflowering plants were selected. They showed the desired leaf structure, well-formed buds and the best tolerance of mould, stress, and pests in that run.
From those plants, the hybrid was stabilized through F6. mutantfarmer carried the selection through F5, with the F6 generation now released through Doctor's Choice's own production.
Freaky Ryder is a compact, medium-height autoflower with a dominat central cola and dense, rounded buds The reported aroma combines pine and floral notes with a sharper fuel edge, alongside citrus and pepper.
The cycle is approximately 75 days from seed to harvest, and as an autolfower it does not require a photperiod change to flower. For growers interested in unusual plant structure, the leaf is obviously part of the appeal. The pinnate fern-leaf makes Freaky Ryder look strikingly different from familiar cannabis plants, and it also gives the plant an ornamental quality of its own.
What the Unusual Leaf Can and Cannot Do
The fern-leaf phenotype is one reason Freakshow genetics have attracted so much attention. Cannabis is often recognized first by its familiar palmate leaf, and Freakshow breaks that visual pattern.
That can make the plant less immediately recognizable to someone unfamiliar with cannabis, particularly when viewed from a distance. But it should not be confused with invisibility.
Freaky Ryder still smells like cannabis during flowering, with its pine, floral, and pungent fuel character. The flowers themselves also look like cannabis. Someone with experience may recognize the plant quickly.
The honest description is simpler: the fern leaf removes one familiar visual cue, It does not remove the plant's other characteristics, and it does not change its legal status. Growers remain repsonsible for understanding and folowing the laws that apply where they live.
That same unusual appearance aso makes Freaky Ryder Auto interesting beyond the idea of visual discretion. Where growing cannabis is legal, the fern-like foliage can have genuine ornamental appeal, particulalry for growers who enjoy unusual plant forms and the character of mutant genetics.
A Different Kind of Breeding Story
Freaky Ryder Auto is the result of an unusally long chain of decisions. Shapeshifter chose to preserve plants other breeders might have discarded. Freakshow was selected through generations until its distinctive leaf became a stable characteristic. 7 East Genetics advanced that line to F9. Joint Doctor's Lowryder provided the autoflowering foundation through Doctor's Choice. mutantfarmer spent years selecting the combination of mutant structure and autolfowering behaviour. Doctor's Choice brought the project into its breeding programme and production, while Seedsman is making the feminized version available to a wider audience.
There is a commercial product at the end of that journey, but the product makes more sense when the journey is understood. Freaky Ryder is unusual because the breeders deliberately kept something unusual alive.
After forty years, normal may get a little monotonous. Freakshow is what can happen when a breeder decides that strange is worth keeping.
