Oregon to Protect Cannabis Users in the Workplace

A new bill introduced to the Oregon Senate this week would protect the rights of cannabis users in the workplace. Current Oregon law states that an employer has the right to terminate an employees contract if they test positive for cannabis consumption. However, representatives and advocates of the cannabis industry believe that these termination circumstances are unjust, especially as the presence of THC can remain in the body for a number of weeks after ingestion and a simple urine test could not determine whether the cannabis use impaired the employee during working hours. The bill in question - which would be the first of its kind in America - would halt the vast number of employees who have been fired for having cannabis in their system, despite Oregon voters approving recreational cannabis in 2014. While the bill is still being discussed in the Senate, a number of the state's education and political leaders have vociferously opposed the measure calling it "unconstitutional". A decision is expected in the next 10 days.
