Mexico Legalizes Medical Cannabis

In an historic moment for the country, Mexican President signed a bill yesterday legalizing cannabis for medical use in the country. Discussions regarding a medical cannabis bill started as early as 2015. In December of last year, the Senate passed the bill and the Parliament’s lower house approved it in April. The new bill specifies that the Mexico Ministry of Health will be asked to draft and implement regulations that regulate the medical use of cannabis and its therapeutic derivatives. The law also effectively removes the criminalization of the use of cannabis, THC, CBD and other derivatives as well as any further research into the medicinal benefits of the plant. However, any prescribed medical cannabis must contain 1% or less of THC under the new guidelines.
