Do-Si-Dos Cannabis: The Origins

Strains

A popular and flavourful cannabis strain, the famous Do-Si-Dos (pronounced dosey-doe) has some interesting origins regarding its parentage and name. In this article, Seedsman takes a deep dive and gives some background on this delicious weed.

Do-Si-Dos: What’s in a name?

It might seem odd to name a cannabis strain after a square dancing move, but that’s precisely what we have here. A do-si-do is a move where two partners face each other, approach, and then pass around back to back before returning to meet each other. Dos a dos is French for back-to-back, as opposed to vis a vis, which means face-to-face. Interesting, but how did it become the name of a tasty cannabis strain? The answer is intriguing.

The Girl Scouts of The USA will be familiar to many, especially in the world of weed. Indeed, one of today's most popular and sensational-tasting varieties is GSC, which is short for Girl Scout Cookies. GSC has like-named derivative strains based on the cookie phenomenon, including Thin Mint and Platinum GSC, both named after varieties of the sweet and delicious cookies sold since the early 1900s to raise funds for troop activities. Today, the selling of cookies continues as a means to raise funds while teaching young Scouts entrepreneurial skills and social lessons.

But back to Do-Si-Dos....

This sumptuous cannabis strain takes its name from a popular variety of those cookies sold across America. The Do-Si-Dos cookies comprised a peanut butter filling sandwiched between two delicious crunchy oatmeal cookies. Fittingly, the cannabis strain of the same name is packed with sweet flavours, cookie-like aromas, and creaminess in abundance.

Breeding Do-Si-Dos

The original Do-Si-Dos came to life in Oregon sometime around 2016, when Archive Seed Bank’s Fletcher Watson, on a mission to preserve the west coast’s finest and most elusive strains, decided to breed a mutant phenotype of GSC known as OG Kush Breath with his prized Face-Off OG. In a 2017 interview with the Willamette Week, Watson spilled the beans on the breeding process, saying OGKB wasn’t a commercially viable strain. Still, it did have superb taste and potency.

The strain tended to turn hermaphrodite, and to hang on to the positive attributes, he decided to breed it with his a Face-Off OG male. It was a success; the Bay Area community lapped it up, with a few clones being created and released among growers. The rest is history. Do-Si-Dos quickly found favour as it travelled the West Coast, building quite the following along the way.

About Do-Si-Dos

Appearance

Due to their bright and colourful appearance, Do-Si-Dos varieties make for a stunning addition to any grow room or garden. Their bright pistils with lavender and lime-green coloured leaves are head-turners, but on closer inspection, you’ll find a trichome production that’s off the charts. One look at a Do-Si-Dos strain and the promise of that high potency is apparent.

Aroma and Flavour

Do-Si-Dos strains are highly aromatic, with a sweet, earthy, floral perfume. The scents of citrus, mint and fresh lavender make up the overall aromatic profile, which is deep, rich and inviting. As far as flavour goes, the GSC component of the lineage is present. The trademark creaminess is there, and the sweetness makes it a smoke to satisfy fans of dessert strains. Do-Si-Dos varieties are good for making edibles, especially cookies, cakes and puddings.

Do-Si-Dos Effects

Do-Si-Dos is an indica-dominant hybrid, with 70% indica leading the way. It packs a lot of potency thanks to a THC content around the 25% mark, meaning an intense, euphoric effect that slowly transforms into blissful body relaxation. The indica-dominant nature of ‘Dosi’ makes it a great night-time companion, and it is no surprise to see such a powerful strain listed by many as a top choice for treating insomnia symptoms.

Do-Si-Dos Strains: Tips for Growing

Do-Si-Dos strains grow well indoors and out, typically yielding around 350gr/m2 indoors and close to 750gm/plant in the great outdoors. Flowering time is around 60+ days. As an indica-dominant strain, it will reach an average height inside but can get somewhat lankier outdoors.

These strains are popular with intermediate and advanced growers and will grow like GSC varieties. The original Dosi is known for its adverse reactions to heat and humidity, so keep a close eye on these variables if you’re growing Do-Si-Dos strains. Many cultivators seem to prefer growing Dosi strains indoors as it’s easier to manage the temperature and humidity via equipment. If you do decide to try your hand at growing one of these excellent varieties, it’ll help if you’re well-versed in defoliation to allow good airflow to the bud sites during flowering.  Bring a strong odour control game to tame those powerful aromas.

This squat, robust indica-dominant auto proves there's more to quality cannabis than merely size.  When produced inside, a maximum height of 100cm is still good for superb yields. Dos Si Dos auto is a striking-looking plant with all the famous hallmarks of the photoperiod strain, including that delicious sweet flavour.

Do-Si-Dos Cookies Auto

By combining the best of Dos-Si Dos with GSC and an unnamed auto, 00 Seeds have triumphed, creating Do-Si-Dos Cookies Auto, a variation on the classic Dosi with a twist. This easy-growing variety packs a THC content of around 22%, with a balanced effect that is both cerebrally uplifting and bodily relaxing.

When grown indoors, these fairly short plants complete their entire life cycle in no more than 90 days, producing a respectable yield of 500gm/m2. The addition of pine and menthol notes make the aroma and flavour of this strain somewhat different from the original, but just as powerful as the Do-Si-Dos strain loved by so many.

If you're yet to experience the sweet and delicious flavours of a Do-Si-Dos cannabis, you're missing out! The taste spectrum and effects have to be experienced, as Dosi cannasseurs the world over will attest.
