Matthew Clark

Dr. Matthew Clark (MA, PhD) is a dynamic figure in the world of yoga philosophy and Hinduism studies. He started his academic journey at SOAS, teaching Hinduism from 1999 to 2003, and has been a Research Associate there since 2004. Matthew's extensive knowledge in yoga philosophy and history has led him to lecture at yoga centers across the UK, Europe, Israel, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the USA since 2002. He has enriched the learning experience at yoga retreats, workshops, and teacher-training courses for over twenty-five different teachers and organizations.

Matthew specializes in writing content relating to the rich history of the cannabis plant, often with specific focus on the history of cannabis use in the far east. Many of his articles on Seedsman take the reader on a fascinating journey through ancient times as his knowledge and deep research of cannabis and culture intertwine, shining a light on the importance of this special plant through the ages.

Matthew's scholarly contributions include a plethora of articles and books focusing on yoga, soma, and sādhus (yogis). Notably, his PhD thesis, centered on a sect of sādhus (saṃnyāsīs), was published in 2006. His latest book, "The Tawny One: Soma. Haoma and Ayahuasca," released in June 2017, further cements his authority in the field.

Beyond academia, Matthew's personal journey with yoga and India is equally rich. Since his first visit to India in 1977, he has explored several hundred pilgrimage sites and trekked about 2,000 miles in the Himalayas. His engagement with yoga began in the mid-1970s, and since 1990, he has been devotedly practicing Ashtanga Yoga.
