As each new year brings with it advancements in the cannabis world, one thing remained constant – the pursuit of a cannabis strain with the highest THC content.
Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC is essentially one of the compounds/cannabinoids which makes up the cannabis plant and is known to be the primary intoxicant found within the plant.
Certain cannabis plants have been known to provide high THC content; however, with the growing aid of technology, breeders have been able to identify ways to increase THC content in plants via cross-breeding.
Breeders have opted for cross-breeding to combine the genetics from high THC plants to produce the resultant strains, which have the highest THC content. Since strains with a high THC content generally provide the user with an intense and stronger cerebral ‘high’ compared to any other strain, regular uses tend to opt for the aforementioned to incur the said cerebral ‘high’, which may not be possible with its counterparts.
What is a high THC percentage in weed? Well, that’s subjective, but each year it seems to creep up a percent or two. It won’t be long until we crack 30% and go on from there.

L.A. Peyote Kush
L.A. Peyote Kush is an indica-dominant strain bred by crossing the clone-only L.A. Kush with Peyote Purple. LA Kush's origins are shrouded in mystery. There are some claims that it is derived from an OG Kush phenotype, possibly crossed with Diesel. At the same time, another story was that it hailed from Orange County, and was grown from single bag seed.
Peyote Purple, meanwhile, is an S1 back-cross of Bubba Kush and is known for its high THC potential and its deep purple, almost black, appearance towards the end of flowering.
Northern Lights Auto
Northern Lights Auto was created by crossing Northern Lights with a ruderalis strain to add auto-flowering properties. It is a robust and resistant indica-dominant hybrid producing high levels of THC and good yields.
The scent and taste are fruity and sweet, with earthy pine and sweet 'n' sour plum jam coming to the fore. THC levels are very high at 23%, with a mere 0.5% CBD. The effect is one of mental relaxation coupled with a strong body high.
Amnesia FAST
Seedsman's Amnesia FAST is the product of a breeding programme between Soma's Amnesia and a top-secret hybrid strain. It is 70% sativa and 30% indica. This is a potent and productive marijuana strain with high THC levels.
There are marked similarities between this strain and the original Amnesia. Although the aroma is somewhat fruitier with some floral notes. THC levels have been measured at between 20 - 23% giving a very potent effect. It strikes a nice balance between indica and sativa. Despite its power, it remains a very uplifting and creative high.
