Cannabis 101

Alright, picture this: you’ve got your hands on some primo buds, the kind that make your eyes light up just at the sight of them. You’re ready to roll up a fat one and enjoy a relaxing smoke session. But then, disaster strikes – somehow, someway, your precious stash gets wet. Maybe you dropped it in a puddle, spilled your drink on it, or it took an unexpected dive into the sink. Or maybe you've simply been handed a batch that wasn't dried and cured properly.

Whatever the cause, your heart sinks as you stare at your soggy cannabis. But fear not, fellow stoner! There are ways to salvage your wet buds and get back to enjoying that sweet, sweet green goodness. However, it's crucial to avoid smoking damp weed due to the potential health risks, including mold formation, which can harm your lungs and overall health.

How Do Cannabis Buds Get Wet?

First things first, let’s talk about how your cannabis might end up taking an unwanted bath. Accidents happen, right? Maybe you’re chilling by the pool, joint in hand, and a sudden gust of wind sends your stash flying into the water. Or perhaps you’re a little clumsy in the kitchen and knock over your glass, drenching your weed in the process. If the weed wasn't dried and cured properly, you've got work to do before you can smoke it, and the same applies if it's been stored in humid conditions. Wet weed is the worst. You can't smoke it in that shape, so you have to take action.

Why? Well, first of all, you may have difficulty lighting it, and you'll definitely struggle to get a decent puff - but that frustration is actually doing you a favor. Wet weed can lead to potential mold growth and impact your health. To maintain its quality and safety, make sure to store your weed in a dry place, check it well before you use it, and use proper drying techniques if it gets wet.

The Effects of Excess Moisture on Cannabis

So, what happens when your buds get wet? Well, aside from the obvious dampness, water can actually wreak havoc on your precious herb. Like we said, moisture can lead to mold and mildew growth, which is a big no-no if you value your health and the quality of your smoke. Mold spores in wet cannabis can pose serious health risks, especially for individuals with weakened immune systems or preexisting conditions. Plus, wet weed is a pain in the butt to grind and smoke. Ever tried rolling a joint with soggy bud? It’s like trying to roll up a wet sponge – not a pleasant experience, let me tell you. What's most alarming is that a variety of molds have been found in cannabis flower purchased from legal dispensaries in the United States. So even if you're getting your buds from a trusted source, always, always, ALWAYS check it for signs of dampness and mold.

Identifying Wet vs. Cured Weed

To avoid rolling damp joints, it's crucial to know how to distinguish wet weed from properly cured weed. The best method is to use your senses: touch, sight, and smell.

Touch Test Properly dried and cured weed should feel dry but sticky. If the buds still have small stems, try bending one; a clean snap indicates well-dried weed. When you gently press a bud between your fingers, you should hear a crinkling sound as the leaves and calyxes break. Wet weed, on the other hand, will feel moist and will compress when pressed.

Smell Test A strong aroma is a sign of well-cured cannabis flowers. Wet buds tend to smell grassy due to the presence of chlorophyll and excess moisture. If the weed is moldy, it may emit a smell resembling ammonia or another unpleasant odor.

Grind Test To identify wet weed, try grinding or cutting it. Dry buds will break apart easily in a grinder or with scissors, while wet weed will stick together and be difficult to separate.

Smoke Test The definitive test for wet weed is smoking it - but exercise caution and make sure you've checked for mold first. Wet buds, due to their high moisture content, won't burn evenly or may not burn at all. If they do light, wet weed will taste unpleasant.

Options for Drying Wet Cannabis

Now that we’ve established why wet weed is a problem, let’s talk solutions. Thankfully, there are a few tried-and-true methods for drying out your cannabis without causing too much damage. The correct way to dry cannabis is by hanging it in a controlled environment, and that's great if you've just harvested your buds. But if you have a small amount of cannabis to deal with, this isn't  an option.

Properly managing the drying process is crucial to maintain the quality of your cannabis, as rushing or compromising this step can degrade the terpenes and cannabinoids in the buds. Take your time and be prepared for proper drying to take hours, probably overnight and possibly longer deoending on the damage. If this is your only stash, you're going to have to be patient, as you simply cannot risk smoking your cannabis before it's properly dried.  Here's what you can do:

Air Drying

This is probably the simplest method. Just spread out your wet cannabis buds on a clean surface and let them air dry for a good few hours. Make sure the area is well-ventilated and not too humid. You can speed up the process by using a standing fan, but be careful not to blast your cannabis buds with too much air – you don’t want them to dry out too quickly and lose potency.

Paper Towel Method

A paper towel roll is a handy thing for cannabis lovers. You can use it to germinate your seeds, or If you’re in a hurry to dry moist weed, you can try the paper towel drying method to ensure it is safe for consumption. Gently wrap your wet buds in a few a paper towels, being careful not to rub or crush them too much. Then, lay them out on a fresh paper towel and let them air dry for 4-8 hours, or longer if necessary. The paper towel will absorb excess moisture, helping your buds dry out faster.

Humidity Packs/Dessicants

You can speed up the drying process on wet weed by placing the buds in a mason jar with a specially-designed humidity pack, such as the Boveda humidity pack. You can also use silica packs, but these will likely dry your buds out too much. Also, you have to be extremely careful when handling these packs, because if they burst and the contents get on your buds, your buds are no longer fit for consumption.

Rice Method

You’ve probably heard of using rice to dry out a wet phone, but did you know it can also work to dry wet weed? Yep, just like with your electronics, you can bury your damp buds in a container of rice and let them sit for a while - anywhere between 4 hours and overnight. The rice will absorb the moisture, leaving your cannabis nice and dry. Just make sure to first, wrap the buds in paper towel, and secondly, use uncooked rice – you don’t want any seasoning or oils getting on your precious buds.

Other Ways To Dry If Your Weed Gets Wet

In those desperate moments when patience isn't an option, here are a few speedy methods to dry your weed. But be warned: all these methods involve heat, air, and light, which will reduce the quality of your cannabis. But hey, desperate times call for desperate measures, and if you're in desperate times, you may opt for one of these solutions:

Drying Weed in an Oven or Microwave

Using an oven or microwave to dry your weed isn’t ideal, but it can save the day—say, if someone spills a drink on your stash at a smoke session.

For the oven method, preheat to 120°C (that's 248°F for our non-metric friends), line a baking tray with parchment paper, spread your ground bud evenly, and bake it until it's dry and aromatic. Check it every 10 minutes to avoid burning and keep the temperature at 120°C—resist the urge to crank it up! Stir occasionally to ensure even drying.

No oven? No problem! You can use a microwave. Set it to a low power setting, place your ground weed in a microwave-safe container lined with baking paper, and heat it for 20-60 seconds, depending on your microwave's power. Keep an eye on it and stir frequently to avoid any hot spots. These methods will degrade the quality of your cannabis for sure, but if you absolutely have to have a smoke, they'll do in a pinch.

Drying Cannabis with a Blow Dryer

For a blow dryer approach, set it to low heat and keep the buds whole (no grinding!). Hold the dryer about 15-20 cm away and move your buds around constantly to ensure even drying. It might feel like you’re giving your weed a blowout, but at least it’s quick! The downside of this method is such that it really ought to render it useless - you risk blowing all those wonderful crystals off your weed.

If you do decide to go this route, please remember only to use it on whole buds. Imagine turning a blow dryer on ground cannabis? Nightmare!

Remember, these methods aren't perfect and can degrade the quality of your weed, but sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do.

Tips for Drying Cannabis Safely

Now, before you go throwing your wet weed into a bag of rice or leaving it out to air dry, there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure the process goes smoothly:

Patience is Key: Drying out wet cannabis takes time, so don’t rush it. Trying to speed up the process by using excessive heat or airflow can actually damage your buds and affect their potency and flavor. It’s better to be patient and let nature do its thing.

Check for Mold: As your buds dry out, keep an eye out for any signs of mold or mildew. If you spot any funky-looking spots or a musty smell, it’s best to toss the affected buds and start fresh. Moldy weed is not something you want to mess with.

Store Properly: Once your buds are nice and dry, make sure to store them properly to prevent any future mishaps. Invest in some airtight containers or jars to keep your stash fresh and dry. And try to avoid storing your cannabis in humid or damp environments – a cool, dry place is your best bet.

Understanding the Relationship Between Moisture and Potency

Concerns often arise regarding the impact of moisture on cannabis potency. The process of drying weed requires patience and specific conditions to maintain its quality. While cannabinoids and terpenes, the compounds responsible for cannabis’s effects and aroma, are relatively stable and largely unaffected by water exposure, the presence of mold can compromise potency and overall quality.

Proper drying and curing are essential steps in preserving potency. Moisture itself may not degrade cannabinoids, but mold growth can lead to potency loss and undesirable effects. Therefore, ensuring thorough drying and effective curing processes is crucial for maintaining cannabis integrity and potency.

In Conclusion

So there you have it – a guide to dealing with wet weed like a pro. Remember, accidents happen, but with a little patience and know-how, you can salvage your soggy stash and get back to enjoying that sweet, sweet smoke. Properly drying your weed before smoking it is crucial to avoid potential health risks associated with smoke wet weed. Just be careful out there, folks – the only thing worse than wet weed is no weed at all!
