When it comes to modern-era indica hybrids, few have endured like the Bubba Kush strain. Dishing out the kind of hard-hitting stone that necessitates a mattress, Bubba Kush’s legendary status came quickly, thanks to the kind of sedative effects that suggest it should perhaps have been named Bubba Cushion. Since its debut in the 1990s, Bubba Kush has worked its way into the hearts of cannabis lovers worldwide – and remains there today. Join Seedsman as we look under the hood of this robust indica-dominant strain and its famed relaxing effects.
Bubba Kush Origins
All good stories contain an element of mystery, and Bubba Kush is no different. Time and again, we look back at the inception of a beloved cannabis strain and find that details are missing from the annals of history, meaning an air of intrigue surrounds the plant.
Bubba Kush had been doing the rounds in the 1990s, making waves by virtue of its strong effects and piquing the curiosity of cannabis lovers at the time. Little was known about where or how it came to be, but it was an instant sensation nonetheless. Eventually, famed breeder Matt Berger (aka Bubba – a nickname said to be given to him by his grandmother) stepped up to fill in the blanks on how Bubba Kush came to be.
Matt Berger is a breeder with a remarkable resume, one his fellow breeders and smokers should laud. Put it this way – if there were a Hall Of Fame for breeders, Matt Berger would bypass the ballot process, walk down a red carpet, and straight through the door. As the creator of the celebrated OG Kush strain – the stable backbone of countless modern hybrids – Berger is breeding royalty.

Matt has been growing cannabis from seed since the tender age of 13. He’d sow seeds in the garden of his home in Florida, although his dad would remove the plants before they could bear fruit. After studying chemistry at the University of Florida, Berger would turn his attention to indoor cultivation, and, in 1993, he sowed a bag of seeds believed to be Northern Lights. One phenotype stood out from the rest – a short, stocky indica. According to Berger, this was cloned extensively, and some buds were sent to B-Real and Kenji from hip-hop superstars Cypress Hill. The smoke was a hit, but the bag contained some seeds, likely due to a cross with a Kush Berger had been growing that would frequently turn hermaphrodite. Berger collected and planted the seeds, so Bubba Kush came to be.
Is Bubba Kush Easy To Grow?
There are so many variants of Bubba Kush doing the rounds, which makes it challenging to make a blanket statement about its growing habits. It’s known to be a classic indica – short, bushy, and fairly hardy. Bubba Kush is considered a fairly resilient strain, and presents few headaches for growers – so much so that a rookie can wet their beak here without too much fear.

In terms of climate, Bubba Kush loves to bask in a warmer environment but is comfortable growing either indoors or outside in glorious sunshine. Expect some natural resistance to pests and pathogens and a sturdy plant that produces dense, resinous buds after 8-9 weeks of flowering.
What Does Bubba Kush Smell and Taste Like?
You can expect typical indica ingredients in the aroma and flavor profile of Bubba Kush – earthy, floral, and slightly spicy, and some even describe it as having coffee or cocoa-like notes to it. It’s a highly aromatic strain with a delicious dank imparted by the Kush component. Key terpenes in Bubba Kush include Myrcene, Caryophyllene, and Pinene, which go a long way to explain the spicy, peppery nature of the aroma and taste. Although Bubba grows out with some attractive purple colors to it, it doesn’t carry the fruity, berry-like flavors often found in purple strains. Nonetheless, it’s a heavy-hitter on the palate as much as it is on the body.
Bubba Kush Effects
The original Bubba Kush is marked by that famed indica potency that leaves you feeling sleepy....very sleepy....even though the THC content isn’t as high as some of its more modern indica-dominant hybrid counterparts. Much of the Bubba Kush popularity is down to the hit – a warm, narcotic feeling that takes over the entire body, rendering you extremely relaxed after just a few hits.
Bubba Kush is an ideal strain to unwind with. If you want to chill out at the end of a long day, Bubba Kush is just the thing to soothe away your cares and help you switch off. This is the opposite of a wake-and-bake strain and is best suited to nighttime use to tee up a happy descent towards a good night’s sleep, embracing you in blissful feelings, soothing tired muscles and leaving you feeling carefree and at peace before you hit the hay. Overdo it, and you’ll hit couch lock, but dose correctly and Bubba will take you to the good place.
Tip: Take care to hydrate well if you’re planning a night with Bubba Kush – one of the most commonly reported side effects is dry mouth, so keep the water on standby.

The flowering time of Seedsman’s Bubba Kush is between 9 and 11 weeks. Still, the rewards are worth the wait as you’ll see your growing space filled with beautiful plants, covered in trichomes and bearing delightful green and purple hues. Yields are high; you can harvest between 450-600g/m2 indoors or 450-750g/plant from an outdoor grow. Bud density is impressive, with big, thick buds to the fore, and THC levels between 16-24% means that the narcotic effect is assured.
