A new report conducted by the Task Force on Crime Reduction and Public Safety, led by Jeff Sessions, will pave the way for President Donald Trump to crack down on cannabis in American, according to reports.
The report will be released next week, and experts suggest it will link cannabis use to violent crime and push for longer sentences on those cultivating, selling and using the plant.
This is not the first time that Attornery General Jeff Sessions and the Trump Administration have focused on imposing stricter laws concerning cannabis. Earlier this year, Sessions asked congressional leaders to remove and amendment to the Department of Justice Budget which allows states to control cannabis laws without federal interference. Speaking to the media at the time, Session remarked;
“I believe it would be unwise for Congress to restrict the discretion of the Department to fund prosecutions, particularly in the midst of an historic drug epidemic and potentially long-term uptick in violent crime,”However, a number of Democrats have expressed their disgust at the projected findings in the report, none more so than Senator Brian Schatz from Hawaii, who tweeted his displeasure at the potential outcome... https://twitter.com/brianschatz/status/889265183427887105 A number of both Democrats and Republicans oppose the report are already making moves to conquer Sessions and the Trump administration's stance on cannabis. Rand Paul (R) and Al Franken (D) are sponsoring a Senate bill that would safeguard state medical cannabis laws from federal interference.
