Highland Thai originates in the Burmese border regions of northern and north-western Thailand. Highland Thai is grown by the local tribes-people including those of the Lahu tribe. This land-race cannabis strain is markedly different in both appearance and effect to the Thai-Lao ganja cultivars of north-eastern Thailand bordering Laos.
Highland Thai is a naturally tall plant reaching as high as 4 metres tall in its local area planted directly into the soil. Its branching is quite irregular while leaves are broader than is usually found in sativa ganja cultivars. The seeds of this strain are also quite big and these three attributes tend to suggest genetic ancestry of east Asian hemp centred around Yunnan province in China.
The plants themselves develop larger and slightly denser buds than is usually seen in Southeast Asia. Two main pheno-types have been identified, a so-called green one and a purple one. The green pheno-type sports a musky, citrus-infused aroma while the blue/purple pheno exudes a scent of mango and carrot. Yields are very good with between 1 - 2 kg. of dried buds per plant in their natural environment. It also grows well in greenhouses outside of the region. Harvest time is during December in the northern hemisphere.
In contrast with the aforementioned Thai-Lao strains the effect of Highland Thai is smoother, while still quite trippy and cerebrally-focused, lacking the almost crazy intensity that can make those ganja strains feel like a rocket-trip.
