Crohn’s Disease is a condition that causes inflammation in the lining of the digestive system. It is an incurable disease, meaning that treatment involves controlling the symptoms, which can often enter remission only to flare up again and become very serious.

The cause of Crohn’s disease is unknown, however it is most often attributed to genetics and/or problems with the immune system.

The most common symptoms of Crohn’s Disease are abdomen pain, diarrhoea and weight loss.  This can lead to intestinal blockage and ulcerations, which my require surgery.

There have been various studies on the effect of cannabis on Crohn’s and its related symptoms.

A 2004 study suggested that endocannabinoids are located in numbers in the small and large intestines. Their activation can help relieve inflammation in the lining of the stomach.

While a 2003 research report concluded that modulation of the endogenous cannabinoid system provides new treatment options for a number of gastrointestinal diseases, including nausea and vomiting, gastric ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, secretory diarrhea, paralytic ileus and gastroesophageal reflux disease.
