Do Regular Cannabis Users Have More Sex Than Non-Users?

Whether you are a frequent user of cannabis or not, it is likely that you will have heard the story that using the plant can make you lazy, uninterested and eventually leads to a lack of desire for sex.

However, according to a new research study conducted by the Stanford University Medical Center, this myth has been officially busted.

When assessing a survey conducted by the US Government on Family Growth, the researchers found some startling results.

Of over 28,000 women who took the survey, those who were regular consumers of cannabis had had sex an average of 7.1 times in the 4 weeks prior. In contrast, women who were not regular consumers of cannabis reported having sex an average of 6 times in the 4 weeks prior.

The results were similar for men in that those who consumed cannabis regularly had sex an average of 6.9 times in the 4 weeks prior to taking the survey. While men who were not frequent cannabis users had sex an average of 5.6 times in the 4 weeks prior.

While these figures expose the flaws in a much accepted stereotype, it also raises a number of questions. Why do cannabis users have more sex? Is it a biological response to ingestion or rather the result of social or environmental circumstances?

Previous studies have shown contrasting findings when it comes to sexual arousal and cannabis. Some studies have suggested that cannabis increases arousal, especially in males. However, other studies suggest ingesting cannabis too frequently can reduce sperm count and decrease the likelihood of ejaculation.

Another study focused on social aspects of cannabis and sex, suggesting that because of the plants illegality in most countries, the physical locations for using cannabis are far more intimate, leading to a greater chance of sexual activity.
