If U.S. Presidents Were Cannabis Strains

American Independence Day is traditionally a time of celebration. Sadly, in these politically hyper-polarized times, it’s been almost forgotten that the day should be about having fun. Politics may divide us, but weed should bring people together. As part of Seedsman’s 4th of July festivities, we take a novel look at some of America’s most iconic presidents and imagine which cannabis strains would best define them.

George Washington

Badazz OG Cheese

If you want a strain that defines the first president of the United States, Badazz OG Cheese is hard to top. The original founding father was a noble and honest president who famously grew cannabis in abundance on his land at Mount Vernon, Virginia, back in colonial times – that automatically qualifies him as a badass in our book!

Washington stood about 6ft 1, so it’s fitting that Badazz OG Cheese is a sativa. This luscious strain will top out at around 300cm, making it a tall plant and yield high, too. It’s a hybrid of Badazz OG and UK Cheese, and the irony of the British connection isn’t lost on us, but this is a succulent strain of cannabis that’s sure to please the taste buds.

After a maximum flowering time of 9 weeks – about the same as it took to debate the Constitution – you can look forward to a splendid uplifting and euphoric effect from cannabis with a THC content in the region of 15-20%.

The flavour of Badazz OG Cheese is spicy and herbal from its OG lineage, but with a delicious cheddary quality not seen in the White House since 7th President Andrew Jackson was presented with a massive block of cheese weighing just under a ton on New Year’s Day, 1836!

Thomas Jefferson

Blue Dream

Thomas Jefferson – diplomat, lawyer, architect and philosopher. The 3rd president of the United States was said to be a skilled cultivator of hemp. Jefferson’s diary entries show that he took great care in planting and growing hemp, which was used to make clothing and other materials.

As a man of many talents who rose to power during the age of enlightenment, we can think of no better strain than Blue Dream. Like Jefferson, Blue Dream is beloved, legendary, highly productive and has multiple talents.

Blue Dream takes 10 weeks to flower, and while it presents no unique growing problems, a skilled cultivator (like Thomas Jefferson) can extract the most potential from this elite cannabis strain. A terrific therapeutic strain, Blue Dream has a THC content of around 20% – and its uplifting cerebral properties would’ve been perfectly suited to a philosopher like Jefferson.

This high-yielding strain can provide as much 850gm/plant when grown outdoors – which would’ve been music to Jefferson’s ears back on his Monticello estate. The lemony, citrus taste of Blue Dream is complimented by sweet berry notes, making for a succulent smoke to relax with on the back veranda.

Abraham Lincoln

Jack Herer

Honest Abe was the 16th president of the United States and is fondly remembered as an upstanding and noble man who fought for what was right. It’s only fitting, then, that if Lincoln is compared to a cannabis strain, it be Jack Herer. Both men fought the great fight for freedoms not afforded in their time and risked the ire of their peers to take a stand.

These two are among the most iconic names in their respective fields, Lincoln, an advocate of civil rights and Herer, an advocate of cannabis rights. The connections don’t end there, though – both men died on April 15th (albeit 145 years apart and just shy of 4/20!). Both were Republicans, too, and Herer famously ran for president twice – in 1988 and again in 1992 – although by this point, Herer represented the more liberal Grassroots Party.

Jack and his eponymous strain are as identifiable with cannabis as Lincoln is with the White House. The strain is an indica/sativa hybrid boasting an impressive 20% THC content. Its now-legendary sweet-yet-peppery taste makes it as easily identifiable as Lincoln’s top hat makes him. The beauty of the Jack Herer strain lies in its simplicity. It’s easy to grow, flowering in 9 weeks and has a heavily euphoric effect.

Lincoln may not have grown cannabis, but he sure looks like he smoked it.

Ulysses S Grant

The OG #18

President Ulysses S Grant was the 18th commander-in-chief of the United States, so his weed strain practically chose itself. The OG #18 suits him right down to the ground because, make no mistake, Grant was an OG. Like the strain, Grant is sometimes overlooked when one recalls presidents of substantial historical significance. But a quick peek at his CV will remind you exactly why he’s notable.

President Ulysses S Grant created the Justice Department. Still, his most memorable achievement is arguably that before taking office, he was the Commanding General who led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War in 1865. Gangster credentials: solid.

Historically, Grant is often assessed as one of the worst presidents in US history and wasn’t without his scandals. However, his administration had some valuable accomplishments, notably from a civil rights standpoint. Grant famously stood up for African-Americans, fighting against voter suppression perpetrated by the Ku Klux Klan.

The OG #18 strain, then, seems fitting. Like Grant, this strain is highly decorated, winning 2nd place indica at the High Times Cannabis Cup in ’09 and 1st Hydro at Spannabis 2011. It’s a high-yielding, mostly-indica hybrid from DNA Genetics. Like Ulysses S Grant, it does well on the ‘battlefield’, being incredibly resistant to pests and pathogens.

Known for its sour flavour, OG#18 is a pungent strain with Diesel notes and Chem Dawg characteristics – but yields up to 1/3 higher. Speaking of high, the effects of OG#18 are typically indica – long-lasting, happy and relaxing.

John F. Kennedy

Acapulco Gold

A quick hop in the Seedsman time machine fast-forwards us to 1960s America. It was the time of a cultural explosion. The iconic JFK was in office, the hippies were coming, and they were armed to the teeth with quality weed. The most abundant strain around that time was the legendary Acapulco Gold. If you watch any movies from the era, weed was usually namechecked as the rare sativa, which was as much a part of the 60s culture as JFK himself.

The parallels draw themselves here: A classic, beloved and iconic president, a classic, beloved and iconic cannabis. Both from the same era, both are sorely missed, as Acapulco Gold is almost impossible to find these days. JFK and Acapulco Gold are two of the greatest of all time. Both are measured as a hallowed benchmark by old-timers to this day!

Acapulco Gold is a sativa, and like JFK, is famed for its striking looks and relaxing effect. People loved Acapulco Gold. Back then it was the strain celebrities wanted to rub shoulders with back in the day -and many of them did. It’s a true connoisseur pot, with toffee, citrus and pine notes running through both the aroma and the flavour.

Men wanted to be it, and women swooned wherever it went. Wait, no – that’s JFK. Although it might as well be the cannabis we’re talking about. The once-ubiquitous weed was as good-looking and popular as the man himself and was a true sensation of the 1960s.

Bill Clinton

Sex Bud

Ah, yes – Slick Willie. It would be seriously remiss of us to leave President Clinton off our list. He was, after all, the man in power in 1996 when California famously passed Proposition 215. Prop 215 was the Compassionate Use Act, allowing the legal use of medicinal cannabis in California. It was a landmark ruling and has had quite the snowball effect on legal marijuana use in the United States.

Clinton has a history with cannabis. In 1992, while out on the campaign trail, he famously said in a TV interview that he tried smoking pot but didn’t inhale. He went on to add that he didn’t like it, and he didn’t try it again. However, a voice similar to Matthew McConaughey’s in Dazed and Confused and a penchant for playing a mean, laid-back saxophone tell a different story.

If Clinton were a cannabis strain, he’d surely be Sex Bud. An enhanced version of the C99 Sativa Strain, Sex Bud produces a wave of sexual energy which is perfect in moderate doses for a libido boost. Just the thing for a seductive old smoothie like Bill Clinton!

Sex Bud is a short plant (it’s what you do with it, alright?), but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t yield high (see?). When treated with tender loving care, Sex Bud can yield as much as 600gm/plant. This is no mean feat for a plant that tops out at 100cm.

It (Gennifer) Flowers in 8-9 weeks and carries a fruity flavour of pineapple and grapefruit. Whether it’s best smoked in a blunt wrap or not is up to you.

Donald Trump

Orange Bud

Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, has been possibly the most polarizing one of recent times. Whether you love or hate him is neither here nor there. Trump was a ball of energy who worked tirelessly on the campaign trail, and in office.

One of the most quotable and memorable figures ever occupying the White House, Trump never shied away from the spotlight. It’s just a shame he didn’t do more for legalisation while in office, especially considering his initials are the 4th and 20th letters of the alphabet!

With its bright orange pistils and incredible potency, Orange Bud is the perfect strain for Donald Trump. It’s high in THC (around 17%); some find it overpowering, but others love it. It’s also a hugely productive strain, yielding up to 600gm/plant in just 8 weeks of flowering time.

Like Trump, who stands fully 6ft 2 inches, Orange Bud is tall – she can double in height during her stretch. Even more like Trump, Orange Bud carries a stimulating cerebral high that lends itself well to social situations. Prepare to be highly talkative and never stuck for something to say!

Orange Bud is loaded with incredible citrus flavours, resilient ,and vigorous. You can’t deny this strain is very Trump-like in its attributes!

That concludes our magnificent seven strains for seven presidents – and it was a challenge to write an article about plants and presidents without mentioning a Bush.

Which strains would you match to which US presidents? Let us know in the comments.
