Cambodia, Land of the Bong

 Cambodia Is an absolutely stunning country with some of the warmest, kindest people you will find anywhere, which considering its incredibly difficult recent history is even more reason to love this country if you are lucky enough to visit.

In East Asia, there are many new aggressive economies already fully plugged into the modern technological leaning industries and there are countries where agriculture and a traditional way of life still prevail. Iva always had a special love for the latter and Cambodia is certainly that. Most famous now for the incredible Angkor Wat complex in the north, the country more widely boasts some of the region’s best historical and archaeological sites and the feeling of a slower pace of life once you leave Phnom Penh, the capital is tangible.

 Along with the great food, cheap costs of life, a beautiful coastline, countryside and old colonial towns slowly being transformed into very friendly tourist havens which cater to all kinds of traveller,  Cambodia happily has a very relaxed attitude towards personal cannabis use.

 While its technically illegal and you can possibly get a fine if you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, I have found it possible to enjoy my cannabis intake without ever worrying about the ramifications of getting in trouble with the authorities.

 Like in some other countries, edibles seem completely tolerated and basically defacto legal throughout the country, cannabis use in Khmer cooking as a medicine and as a spice and remedy has meant that its small scale growing and use in food it completely acceptable everywhere and as a result the phenomenon of the ‘Happy’ Pizza shop has exploded to most people’s great amusement on  first arrival.

 As well as the Ganja pizza places there are also a good number of coffeeshops or ‘smoking friendly’ bars throughout the country in most of the main tourist locations. Some of which have an unbelievable selection of local and imported genetics on offer in both weed and hash form. You have to keep reminding yourself you are in a less developed country in the middle of east Asia as you are being offered incredible American weed from this year’s most recent genetics ( all be it at very high prices normally) and hash from north Africa and central Asia, along with edibles which put anything I have seen in the UK to shame.


As for the bong, well you don’t actually see many bongs in Cambodia really, but if you are visiting and you are of a slightly more senior age you will find yourself being constantly referred to as a man and occasionally as a woman as ‘bong’. Here it’s a term of endearment and respect but at first, it takes a little getting used to, before long you will be calling people bong as you wander through the streets without giving it a second thought!

So with a little local knowledge and a lot of excitement for the next leg of the trip, I sit back in my seat on the short hop plane from Bangkok to Phnom Penh with a big smile and sure in the knowledge that within a couple of hours ill have pockets full of good weed and the next month is going to be great.
