5 Best Netflix TV Shows to Watch High

“I hate television. I hate it as much as peanuts. But I can’t stop eating peanuts”.

Orson Welles’ famous quote on society’s adoration of the television has never been more prevalent than in today’s society.

And while there is certainly more to life than what is on the black box in the living room, television plays such an important part in the modern world, especially with the success of streaming networks like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu.

The optimum medium for social commentary broadcasts itself into our lives every single day and, whether or not you feel it is detrimental, it certainly has an impact on the way culture is shaped.

And if television is the King of cultural influence, then Netflix is its most ardent and eager slave.

Here, we take a look at the very best TV Shows on Netflix to watch when high. Please note that we have avoided the stereotypical television shows that often get branded as stoner favourites, you have read enough about them!

So get comfortable and get that remote control and bowl ready…

Stranger Things

One of the only television shows whose authenticity to its era makes you feel like you have returned to your childhood in the 1980’s. Stranger Things is a glorious love letter to one of the most underappreciated decades of recent times. With nods to classic Spielberg films, as well as 80’s Horror classics, Stranger Things is a visual feast, which makes it the perfect television show to watch when couch-lock sets in.

However, beware of the frequent jump scares, which, if combined with a more potent strain, could put you on edge for the rest of the day!

Freaks and Geeks

Another television show set in the 1980’s, Freaks and Geeks found a cult following despite its cancellation after just two seasons and is now a firm favourite with a wide audience.

Hilarious, charming and life-affirming, this show launched the careers of many comedic actors including Seth Rogen, James Franco and Jason Segel.

There are plenty of nods to the stoner lifestyle but at the heart of its premise, this show is about outsiders and friendships.

This nostalgic and warm piece of television is an ideal pairing for that relaxing indica strain that you have been wanting to try.

Black Mirror

Perhaps the most terrifying television show on Netflix, Black Mirror offers its audience a glimpse into an all too realistic future filled with technological unhappiness and cultural devastation.

Each episode is set in a different version of a dystopian future, where society has crumbled. One of the most eye-opening episodes comes in the form of “Nosedive”, which focuses on a world where people are instantly rated out of five stars based on visual appearance, echoing social media applications of today.

Dark, scary, eye-opening and mind-blowing, Black Mirror is perfect for a contemplative high. Just make sure that you can get to sleep afterwards without playing dystopian scenarios in your head over and over again.

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp

From the sublime to the ridiculous, this television show appeared on Netflix in 2016 and acts as a prequel to a somewhat forgotten film of the same name from 2001.

What makes this show hilarious and at times, bizarre, is the fact that the same actors have been cast in the roles they played in the film 15 years ago. This means that actors in their early-40’s are tasked with playing teenagers.

While the show is aware of its hilarious age-defying casting and often makes fun of it, Wet Hot American Summer borders on farcical slapstick comedy. However, its fantastic cast and consistent joke-telling make for a roller coaster ride of pure unadulterated fun.

This is the perfect show to watch sharing a bowl with a group of friends. Laughs aplenty are on show here.

Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations

It would have been remiss of us to not put a television show based on food onto this list and Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations is one of the best on Netflix.

We know, Bourdain is an extremely divisive character whose attitude is not to everyone’s taste. However, this show, which explores world culture as much as it does food is an epic feast of colour and vibrancy that stands up as a spectacular travel documentary with or without the cuisine.

The chef travels to over 55 countries in the series, sampling the incredible local food and visiting hidden treasures. This will truly get the taste buds going when high, so make sure you are fully prepared and your refrigerator is stocked with treats before you even think about tuning into this phenomenal food fiesta.
