Effectively there are two main approaches to dealing with addictive use of cannabis: pharmacological and therapeutic. At present there are no effective drugs which can help users deal with cannabis withdrawal. Oral THC reduces cravings but it didn’t stop people using. Some of the other drugs are either counterproductive or have damaging side effects.
So it’s left to therapy. Various types have been tried, single sessions with a counsellor, multiple sessions and group therapy. All had some effect, though any benefit was mostly short-term. The thing which worked best was multiple sessions with a counsellor coupled with multidimensional family therapy.
You may be thinking what a waste of time, but there are a few people with a serious dependency who do need help. Unfortunately, there’s not much out there for them but the need to come up with an effective solution is increasing.
